Some people do this just to be an annoyance to other people, especially streamers who have a lot of followers. It can get to the point where it damages the gaming system itself and you won’t be able to use it anymore. The traffic can overload the machine, causing you to lag and eventually disconnect.
It is usually done through at technique called Distributed denial of service ( DDOS), which is where someone sends traffic to your machine via your IP address. Getting “booted” is a common term for someone kicking you off an online game by attacking your internet connection.
